WHO WE ARE
Surgery without borders.
Opportunity without barriers.
The International Women's Surgical Society (IWSS) is a women-led surgical student organization
built to create a stronger, more connected generation of future surgeons.
01
Why IWSS exists
Founded in 2023 by medical student Zohra Rao, IWSS was created in response to systemic
gender imbalances and the lack of meaningful mentorship within surgical spaces. Born in
Georgia, the society set out to create a safe and ambitious environment where students
can pursue surgical excellence without traditional barriers.
02
What we have built
Between 2023 and 2026, IWSS engaged more than 600 students, hosted seven conferences,
delivered hands-on workshops, led research initiatives, and established international
collaborations with universities in Poland and the UAE.
03
Where we are going
IWSS is expanding beyond its original student community toward a global network of
aspiring surgeons. Through immersive conferences, clinical and research education,
leadership opportunities, and international collaboration, the society is building
pathways for future surgical leaders.
OUR APPROACH
When doors are opened,
talent speaks for itself.
